Methotrexate Reduces the Need for Prednisone in Polymyalgia...

"Methotrexate reduces the need for prednisone in patients with polymyalgia rheumatica, according to the results of a randomized, double-blind trial published in the Oct. 5 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine. 'Steroids are the standard treatment for polymyalgia rheumatica,' write Roberto Caporali, MD, from the University of Pavia, and colleagues from the Systemic Vasculitis Study Group of the Italian Society for Rheumatology. 'However, up to 60% of patients experience disease relapse during steroid tapering, and several studies indicate that steroid treatment can only rarely be discontinued before two years.... Several studies have suggested that methotrexate is effective in polymyalgia rheumatica when administered with oral prednisone.'"

Sports Injuries in Children

"At this time, at least 25 million children engage in school-sponsored sports.[1,2] About 20 million children play in extracurricular, organized sports. Pain in Children With Cerebral Palsy: A Review

"Children with cerebral palsy (CP) face many challenges including impaired motor control and coordination, functional impairment, sensory disturbances, and, sometimes, communication difficulties and cognitive deficits. Pain also may be a problem for children with CP due in part to the inherent deficits associated with the disease, as well as the invasive medical and surgical procedures and rehabilitative activities children with CP undergo on a regular basis. A review of current literature indicates pain is a common experience for children with CP and has been understudied in this population. Further emphasis and research on appropriate assessment and management strategies sensitive to the unique characteristics and limitations of children with CP are warranted."

Bone Disorders Associated With HIV: Pathogenesis & Management

"Bone disorders such as osteopenia, osteoporosis, and osteonecrosis have been reported in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), but the etiology and mechanism of these disorders are unknown. The prevalence estimates vary widely among studies and may be influenced by the presence or absence of antiretroviral therapy and lipodystrophy, severity of HIV disease, and overlapping bone loss risk factors."
